What is the principle behind multi-speed induction motors?

Multi-speed induction motors (multi-speed electric motors) achieve speed regulation by changing the number of pole pairs in the windings. They belong to the category of variable-pole multi-speed AC asynchronous motors, sharing the same core principle as induction motors but with the added functionality of adjustable pole pairs.
Working Principle
Basic Principle
An induction motor generates an electromagnetic torque by utilizing the relative motion between the rotating magnetic field produced by the stator and the rotor windings. When the rotor windings cut through the magnetic flux lines, an induced current is generated, which interacts with the magnetic field to drive the rotor rotation.
Multi-Speed Control
A multi-speed motor achieves different speed outputs by adjusting the number of pole pairs in the windings (i.e., changing the direction of the magnetic field rotation relative to the direction in which the rotor conductors cut through the magnetic flux lines). For example, when the number of pole pairs is changed from 2 to 4, the synchronous speed is reduced to half of the original value, and the actual speed is also correspondingly reduced.
Application Scenarios
Multi-speed motors are widely used in machine tools, cranes, automobiles, aerospace, and other fields, enabling efficient energy savings and precise control through speed regulation.
